What questions did you ask yourself before you started that business?
There are whole loads of questions you need to ask yourself before starting that business. Some of these questions will be, what is your long-term plan? How do I intend to bring my business into the market? e.t.c.
If you answer some of these questions, great! but I think there isa particular question one which is far more important. Is this the right career for you? As you read this, I will like you to do a thought experiment. Regularly, I get calls from friends and family; they say to me, Dorcas, I want to start a business; I have these few thousands I think Ican make more from doing a business. But my question will be why do you want to start a business? Why do you want to be an entrepreneur? If you want to start up a business, then you are an entrepreneur. An entrepreneur is a job just like every other job, a doctor, plumber. An entrepreneur is somebody that creates a solution for other people. Let us look at a day in a life of an entrepreneur. An entrepreneur wakes up every morning to a list of different problems to solve. So in this thought experiment, I want you to ask yourself, do you like solving problems? I know; you are thinking what problems; a problem can be anything, the problem with your customer's staff, team, everyone has a question for you always. And just to let you know, your product is solving a problem as well. Every time, you have to think about how your product can become a better problem solver. Solving problems helps you stay significant. Our second question in this thought experiment is to write down everything you don't like aboutyour 9 to 5. These may be the pay, structure, your manager, your boss, or anything at all. I will want you to write them all down in the negative on your note, after that look at all these things you do not like and write what will be the opposite of these things. For example, if one of the negative about your 9 to 5 job is about the salary then the opposite will be a pay increase either by getting a new job or getting a qualification that might boost your pay. The solution to this experiment will be; can you get a new job that will give you those things on the positive you have written down. If they are jobs, maybe what you need is a career change, anew career, not to be an entrepreneur. I am not discouraging you here but am concerned for you, for your business, because as an entrepreneur, you get to be everything, the manager, employee, clerk, and all.
My third experiment will be for you to look for successful entrepreneurs and ask them how they mitigated risks and made it through all these problems. In my next series, we will be looking at "problems in an entrepreneur journey and how they solved them "My last experiment for this series will be; is that business a passion does you like doing it?The answer to this question; if you ask me, is that you make your business a side hustle with your 9 to 5.
